- Webraska Navigation provides users with access to continent-wide navigation
using the most up-to-date digital map data provided by NAVTEQ.
The NAVTEQ digital map data covers over 30 countries in Europe, and includes:
- Over 300 000 cities and more than 150 000 towns and villages,
- 6.4 million km of routes,
- Over 1 000 000 points of interest.
Webraska ensures that the map data are always up-to-date by integrating quarterly
NAVTEQ updates on the company's servers as soon as they are available. Drivers
automatically benefit from the most recent updates without having to deal
with the cost and hassle of purchasing CD-ROM/ DVD-ROM updates.
- Webraska Navigation provides the user with fast time to first instruction
– comparable to or faster than traditional navigation systems.
Off-board technology requires that the necessary data for a navigation session
are downloaded from the server. In order to make this procedure transparent
to the user, the following technologies are used:
- Streaming: Webraska Navigation starts guiding drivers shortly after
the map data download begins. The download sequence continues as a background
task and is transparent to the user. Once the map data for an entire route
is downloaded the wireless internet connection with the server is terminated
- System recovery: If the GPRS or 3G network connection is broken during
the route download session (e.g.: while passing through a tunnel), the
system automatically resumes the procedure as soon as the network connection
is available. As a result, the network outage is completely transparent
to the user
- Data Compression: To minimise the amount of data transferred over the
GPRS or 3G network during a route download session, Webraska implements
extremely powerful compression algorithms
- Webraska Navigation enables users to reserve usage of their memory card
for pictures, games and videos.
On-board navigation systems compete with other applications for use of the
memory card within the smartphone. Digital map data for a single country can
take up 250 MB of space, and an order of magnitude more for pan-European data.
Other applications used by the phone are also hungry consumers of memory card
space. For example, 30 seconds of video (640*400) occupies approximately 5
MB.
Off-board navigation systems such as Webraska Navigation use remote servers
to store the continent-wide digital map data accessed by the application.
The client application only downloads the map data needed by the user for
a given route – the route itself and sufficient map data to guide the
user back to their destination in case they take a wrong turn.
The advantage of this approach is that it minimises the use of the memory
card by the application leaving it free for storage of pictures, games and
videos.
